Samantha – Malmö, Sweden

Mike has posted a guard outside my suite and another in the hotel reception. They will remain in radio contact with Mike, who has a room directly opposite mine. We crossed the Øresund Link late last night and checked into this hotel in Malmo. I feel safe in Mike’s capable hands. Mike has a concern that Luis is not the kind of man one tells what to do, the type of man no one crosses without regretting it. He said he had heard rumours about Luis from other close protection personnel; I expect Mike tried to set the scene of how awkward Luis’ life could become if he tries to act against me.

He wouldn’t tell me what happened after I left Luis’ apartment, but I suspect Luis will not want to take matters any further, a ruined million-pound painting or not. I know that I don’t want to see him again, but he is a non-executive director on the Board. I just can’t have him removed without good cause, and I sure as hell don’t want this laundry washing in public. I’ll have to find a way to get rid of him somehow, but carefully; whilst his wife Catalina may partake in his tastes, which I disagree with, she is excellent in the business services she provides for me and my Homes. I want her to continue working with me, and I can separate business from emotion.

Who am I kidding? No, they both must go; I can’t face Luis again and meeting her will only re-ignite the events of last night, bringing back images of her and him that I don’t want in my head. Besides, if I can remove Luis from the Board, she would still be his wife, sharing comments with him and feeding him information on me and my businesses and charities. No, she has to go also.

I hit the speed dial on my mobile, and it rings out, eventually going to voice message. I sigh and speak after the tone.

‘Richard, when you feel like you are free, call me back. No, on second thoughts, speak with Rebecca; she will have instructions for you,’ and I hang up. What has gotten into him?

I dial Rebecca, and she answers on the first ring, ‘Good morning, Samantha. Are you well?’

If only she knew, but she never will. ‘Er, yes, thank you, Rebecca. At some point this morning, Richard will phone you, and I want you to pass on the following instructions to him.’

‘Yes, of course.’

‘I want Catalina removed from all my business and charity interests; just call it a clash of personalities or something, but her contract is to be terminated quietly, immediately, and without fuss. I don’t care what it costs in early termination penalties; I want Richard to sort it out today. Is that understood?’

‘Yes... of course. Catalina is currently in the air, flying to Sofia for a meeting with the developers of the new Home. Do you want her to attend the meeting first and then.
